SIPADAN ISLAND

Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, with rising of 600 metres (2,000 ft) from the seabed. It is situated in the Celebes Sea off the east coast of Sabah, East Malaysia, which is on the island of Borneo. It was formed by living corals growing up on top of an extinct volcanic cone that took thousands of years to develop. Sipadan is located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin which classified as the centre of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species can be found in this ecosystem. Many dive journals rated Sipadan as one of the top destinations for diving in the world.

Often seen in the waters around Sipadan is that the green and hawksbill turtles which mate and nest there, enormous schools of barracuda in tornado-like formations as well as large school of big-eye trevally, and bumphead parrotfish. Pelagic species such as manta rays, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks and whale sharks also visit Sipadan.

 HISTORY
The name Sipadan is simply legendry in diving circles, conjuring images of twirling tornados of barracudas and jacks, patrolling hammerhead sharks, millions of multi-coloured reef fish and, above all, dozens of sea turtles swimming peacefully everywhere. The waters of Indonesia meets the waters of Malaysia at the 'Ring of Fire'. Within this underwater circus lies one of the world's freshest dive sites. Seeing 10 green and hawksbill turtles in one dive is not uncommon, nor is seeing a school of 300 barracuda and hammerhead sharks. The proximity of dives to shore allows you to gear out and swim out a few yards, and also get some of the best diving of your life. Sipadan Island which is located in the Celebes Sea off the east coast of Sabah is one of the richest aquatic habitations in the world. Not only that, Sipadan Island is also been regarded as one of the best destinations for diving in the world by many dive journals.

Diving in sipadan
Sipadan is constantly rated in the top 10 dive sites worldwide and many argue that it's the first in ranking, everyone who is lucky enough to dive in the area wants to come back to experience it again, with it's beautiful crisp clear blue waters and spectacular underwater wildlife it's no wonder. One of the reason why Sipadan diving has become so famous in the past few decades was largely due to the famous French adventurer Jacques Cousteau who decided to make a documentary based on footage taken while scuba diving in the area. Tens of thousands of people every year have flocked to the area and things were getting out of control but since the year 2000 new limitations have been imposed on Sipadan island by the Malaysian government in order to help protect the ecosystem which means only 120 dive permits are given every day on a first come first served basis. Other restrictions means no one is allowed to stay on the island itself as it is now a wildlife and marine life sanctuary, so people mainly stay on the two closest islands on Mabul and Kapalai
